More than seventy countries suffer under the plague of anti-personnel mines. To restore decent living conditions millions of mines must first be dismantled. Despite the Ottawa Convention of 1997, which banned the manufacture and use of anti-personnel mines, it will take centuries to eradicate the curse... The consequences of mines, tragically, extend far beyond the atrocity of the thousands of innocent victims they kill or maim. Indirect victims of anti-personnel mines number in the millions. Many are refugees, isolated from or deprived of their means of livelihood. |
